In early 2018 the US Treasury Department released a list of senior political figures and oligarchs in the Russian Federation. The list contained some of the world’s richest Russian businessmen and is known as the ‘Putin’ list. It is always fascinating to read about people who have achieved great wealth, what their net worth is, and how they made it. This is the top 10:
10. Roman Abramovich
Net worth: US$11.2 billion
Business ventures: Abramovich owns some of the largest and most expensive yachts in the world. He also owns majority shares in Chelsea Football Club, Evraz, a major steel company and the metals company Norilsk Nickel. As of May 2018 Abramovich was finalizing paperwork to obtain citizenship in Israel on account of his Jewish heritage.
9. Gennadiy Timchenko
Net worth: US$15.7 billion
Business ventures: Timchenko made his fortune through shares in several Russian businesses. Among others, he has shares in Novatek, a gas company, and Sibur Holdings, a petrochemical company. He is rumoured to be very close to Putin.
8. Mikhail Fridman
Net worth: US$15.7 billion
Business ventures: Fridman is the co-founder and co-owner of Alfa Group, a consortium that has diversified investments. His partners are German Khan and Alexsey Kuzmichev. In 2016 Fridman announced that his fortune will be left to charity.

Net worth: US$16 billion
Business ventures: Steel magnate Usmanov owns a large stake in Metalloinvest, an iron and steel company. He was also the leader in the state-run Gazprom for several years, an early investor in Facebook and has shares in other companies, including Arsenal Football Club.
6. Vagit Alekperov
Net worth: US$16.4 billion
Business ventures: President of Lukoil, a Russian oil company, Alekperov started amassing his fortune when he acquired three massive oil fields and opened Lukoil in 1991.When Lukoil acquired Getty Petroleum Marketing in November 2000, it became the first Russian company to acquire an American company.

Net worth: US$16.4 billion
Business ventures: Melnichenko made his billions with majority stakes in Eurochem, a fertilizer company, and SUEK, a coal company. He is one of Russia’s youngest billionaires and owns two high-tech yachts, a sailing yacht and a motor yacht – both are named ‘A’.

Net worth: US$16.5 billion
Business ventures: Potanin along with Roman Abramovich. The oligarch also has significant shares in other industries including media, agriculture, insurance, engineering and oil.

Business ventures: Founder and chairman of Novatek, a natural gas company, Mikhelson is also a chair person of Sibur, a petrochemical and gas processing company. Mikhelson is known for his strong interest in art and his ties with prestigious art companies like the Tate museums and the Whitechapel gallery.
