It is Like Stepping Into Another World

Illuminated atriums, chic marble lobbies, and elaborate Art Nouveau staircases welcome elite businesspeople and travellers. They can expect the white-glove treatment from the moment they check in their Louis Vuitton suitcases, until they leave the hotel, clickety-clacking on their Manolo Blahnik stilettoes. Palatial rooms keep visitors warm in the sub-zero Moscow winters, with only the best linen, towel warmers, and climate control – even their feet are kept warm with under floor heating. The super-rich Russians certainly know how to live like royalty – and the hoteliers know how to give their guests the royal treatment.

Who Owns These Lush Locations?

Like many other things in Russia, information about the owners of is a bit hush-hush. Guests keep returning to these grand hotels, with no idea who is working behind the scenes to make everything so exclusive. Truth is that most of the fancy hotels in Moscow are chains, like the Intercontinental Moscow Tverskaya, which is part of the Intercontinental chain, and the Kempinski chain which was started in 1897 in Geneva, and is now not only active in Russia, but the rest of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The exceptions are the SAS Slavyanskaya and the Radisson Royal Hotels, which belong to Russian billionaires Zarakh Iliev and God Nisanov.

Not Everybody in Moscow Needs Caviar and Crepes

Although it is great to stay in fancy hotels from time to time, sometimes something a bit different is fun. Savvy ordinary Russians are now taking advantage of the opportunity to turn a buck by opening their homes to guests, and the range of available accommodations includes all kinds, from bachelor apartments to castles – and even tree houses. Never a dull moment in Russia!
